On/Off - A Jekll & Hyde Story

Chapter Twenty-Five

A Cryptic Message - This week's update is a bit shorter than usual. I was on vacation last week and the posted chapters have now caught up to the revised chapters I had in the bag. Gonna pick up the pace this week to bring everyone a nice big update next Sunday. In the meantime, I just wanted to take a minute to tell you about the first printed novel from Cryptic Bindings. "On/Off - A Jekyll and Hyde Story" will be released on November 4th. It's the creepy little story of a college freshman with early onset Parkinson's Disease, who undergoes an experimental procedure to control the symptoms of his illness, with horrific results. If you're interested in receiving further updates regarding the release of "On/Off" or the subsequent publication of "Untitled Thriller," please send an email to crypticbindings@gmail.com with the subject "MAILING LIST." Also, don't forget the title contest for "Untitled Thriller," the lack of a title is becoming a wee bit embarrassing. One more thing, in order to gauge the interest in Kindle editions of Cryptic titles, if you have a Kindle reader, please mention that in your email. Look forward to hearing from everybody!

Chapter 25 - The Scene Inside

“I’m in the utility tunnel on the first floor.”

Without realizing it, Nick had pressed his back into the corner of the room, trying to squeeze himself into the tightest, most protected place he could find. He held the phone against his mouth, speaking into the mouthpiece with a hushed hiss.

“I don’t know what’s going on here, man, but there are gunmen in this building.”

“We’re aware of that, son.” Phelps responded.

“I was in another part of the building when the alarms went off. My girlfriend was with me. Her name is Morgan Phillips.”

There was a pause.

“Morgan is here with us, Nick.”

Nick’s breath caught in his throat. “She is?” He exhaled in a series of stammering gasps. “Thank God.”

Phelps continued, his southern drawl dripping through the handset. “Son, we’re not sure what the hell is going on, but we’re hoping you might be able to give us a little more information about what’s happened in there.”

“I’ll try.”

“We don’t know who these people are, or what they want, we don’t have a clue. So we don’t know how to deal with them yet. If they’ll negotiate. If they just want to get out. If they’re there to take lives.”

“There was blood,” Nick muttered.

Phelps stopped short, “Blood-?”

“In the Immunology Department office.”

“Did you see any victims?” Phelps asked. “Any bodies.”

“No.”

“Have you seen anyone?”

“Yeah. I had to run from two men. They saw me as I was heading downstairs to get out of the building.”

“So, you’re near the front rotunda?”

“I was. I’m a little ways away from there now.”

“Can you hear anything?”

“Not really.”

Nick was trying to slow his breathing. He strained his ears, listening, trying to picture the corridor in his mind, mentally walking through the halls and out to the rotunda where he had seen the men with their guns, and the hostages.

“We know these people have hostages in that part of the building. Were you able to get a look at them? Could you see who they have with them?”

Images flickered through Nick’s mind. Backpacks and laptops. An iPod smashed across the floor. He saw the lady from the lunch line slumped against a wall, her hands held to her face.

“There are mostly students, some of the people who work downstairs.”

“How many do you think they have?”

“Maybe a couple dozen.” Nick muttered.

“Did anyone seem hurt?”

“Look, I’m sorry, I really can’t say.”

There was a long pause. Nick could hear muffled voices conferring on the other end of the line, then Phelps’ voice came back through.

“Nick, we may be asking you for a little help in a bit. Would you be able to do that for us?”

Nick felt sweat pop from his forehead. “I can try.”

“Good. Good.” Phelps paused a beat. “We’ve got someone here who’d like to talk to you now.”

“Okay.”

The sound paused again, then Morgan’s voice came through. “Baby, is that you? Are you all right?”

Nick’s heart started racing. “Yeah babe, I’m fine.”
